How Can I Build a Home With Trusses and Still Offer Storage Options?

Many builders prefer working with a professional Roof Truss Company in San Diego to provide affordable options for their construction projects, but they also worry about flexibility.  Homeowners are more discerning than ever, and many want plenty of storage options, including attic space, that some trusses simply can’t provide.  However, roof truss manufacturers in San Diego don’t have to limit options for builders who want more.  By choosing the right style of truss, builders can work with trusses and still provide the storage capabilities their clients want.

 Which Trusses Offer Storage Options?

There are two primary styles of trusses that offer storage options for attic spaces:  fink trusses and attic trusses.  While both of these styles offer space for storage, there are differences between the two.

Fink truss styles.  A “fink” truss offers storage because, instead of a center king post, the truss is constructed with angled webbing that includes spaces which can be utilized for storage.  In many cases, the central triangle shape of the stud includes a great deal of room through which a person can move to store and retrieve items.  While fink trusses do not provide complete attic space storage, they help homeowners utilize a great deal of their unused attic and are therefore a very popular choice.

Attic truss styles.  The primary difference in fink and attic truss styles is the shape of the central opening.  Where a fink truss has a limited opening in the shape of a triangle, attic trusses are constructed so that there is a large, square or rectangular opening in the center.  In homes in which a second floor is planned, these types of trusses can be used to isolate space for additional rooms.  The trusses are set so that the “walls” of the new room are shaped with ready-made studs.  Drywall and insulation can then be added for instant square footage additions.  This style is very popular for homeowners who do not want to finish attic space at first but have plans to do so later.

Both fink and attic style trusses give homeowners flexible options that give them plenty of additional storage now while offering options for upgrades later.  Because of this, these two are some of the most popular truss styles being manufactured today.  Of course, it is also important to deal with a truss manufacturer who produces sturdy, high-quality trusses, especially since the design of these types of trusses has the potential to weaken the central load bearing capability compared to king- or queen-post truss designs.
